Sugadeaux Cupcakes Tasting Night
Jess aka Sugadeaux has balls.
Not only did she invite some of the most knowledgeable & critical fooderati in Melbourne (just to clarify, not referring to myself here) to taste her cupcakes, she invited them to taste her newest cupcake creations and let them decide which ones were worthy of becoming a part of her regular menu.
Ballsy right?
I could not imagine anything more terrifying than asking foodies, bloggers and chefs to swarm in en masse to sample and score your baking skills.
But Jess did it.
Because she is legendary.
And brave.
Arriving at the event I felt WAY out of my league, surrounded by some of the most well known food bloggers in town. Giant SLR cameras everywhere! If I was nervous, God only knows how Jess was feeling. I ended up sitting at a table with Jeroxie Addictive and Consuming, MEL: HOT OR NOT, Syrup & Tang, Tummyrumbles.com, Eating With Jack and Essjay Eats.
See? Bloggerati.
The night was hosted at Provenance Food and Wine in Collingwood which was the perfect venue for the event – cozy, intimate and warm. After champagne and canapes we settled down at our tables and opened up our menus:
I know right?!
We were also given score sheets that we were asked to fill in throughout the night:
I’m not sure how helpful my notes were. Not only did I manage to get cupcake ALL OVER my sheet and scrawl all over the page in incredibly messy writing, but when I couldn’t think of anything to say other than ‘yummy’ I focussed on things such as the fact that I liked Jess’s hair and makeup. And that the Sour Gummy flavoured cupcake looked rude. Well it did! Look:
We shared one cupcake between four throughout the tasting, which meant in total we only consumed two cupcakes each. It felt like we ate eight whole cupcakes. Complete and utter sugar coma.
Here’s a slice of the first cupcake, Elderflower & Vanilla which I LOVED:
Here are some of the other delicious cupcakes pre-massacre. Wattleseed Macadamia:
Choc Dipped Cherry:
Strawberry Choc Balsamic:
Mexican Chocolate:
My absolute favourite from the tasting was Lychee Jasmine, but my photograph is totally pants. So here’s one from MEL: HOT OR NOT’s post.
My most beloved flavours from the night were Lychee Jasmine and Butter Toffee (oh my god. Just…oh my god). I could also picture myself being very happy to eat a box of the Elderflower Vanilla, Strawberry Choc Balsamic and Choc Dipped Cherry. Sadly though most people weren’t a fan of the Elderflower Vanilla and therefore it will not be going onto Sugadeaux’s regular stock list. Also, two flavours that I wasn’t crazy about: Wattleseed Macadamia and Mexiacan Chocolate, were very well received by most. So it just goes to show that you can’t please everyone!
In addition to the power-bloggers I sat with throughout the night, it was fabulous to meet Eating Melbourne, That Jess Ho and @wendyonline, and lovely to see Melbourne Gastronome again. I also spotted @PierrickBoyer and @stylemelbourne from a distance. Geeze I hope I didn’t forget anyone..
At the end of the night we all walked a away with a box of THIS:
If you do not taste Sugadeaux’s butter toffee in your lifetime, you have not lived.
A big thank you to @davehynesmith from Provenance for hosting such a wonderful event. And of course a huge congratulations to Jess for an amazing night. That woman is a machine. So clever, talented and inspirational.
Isn’t she gorgeous?

*mouth watering post* Far out. I. Want. I havent’ sampled any of @sugadeaux’s cupcakes, but I think I need to! Thanks for this post – I felt like I was there just reading this! Brilliant work :)
I want to try the Strawberry Choc Balsamic more than I want red wine.
And that is an awful lot.
Can you order these online?
Because Newcastle need to try them.

Sounds like a great marketing move! For the delicious ones, she gets praised, for the not-so-good she gets to build the boggers egos by defering to their judgement.
And then the bloggers all write about her! Brilliant. The key thing here was that Sugadeaux had the confidence in her product to put it out there (which looks and sounds yum BTW).
So yes, pretty balsy, but smart too!
Now I want a cupcake dammit!
ZOMG. Want Mexican chocolate now after all the great reviews. Picked up my first sample pack a few weeks ago and have been dreaming of the Strawberry Shortcake and Salted Caramel.
Cupcake genius! So jealous of the tasting event. Sounds like a dream
Kim: You do need to. They taste better than they look.
Lexi: I don’t think they deliver to Newcastle I’m afraid!
James: You’re right. Very smart move :)
Emma: I’m sure your cupcakes are pretty damn good too!
hmmmm nommm it looks delicious! Sharing the cupcakes is pretty good, get a little bit of everything… I guess that’s the point of a ‘tasting’ haha

*salivating* Yummm…those cupcakes look delicious and right now, having NOT had my lunch yet, it’s making me even hungrier. Lucky you for being part of that wonderful tasting event! :)
