Fiji…and the Proposal
If you are not a fan of mushy stuff, stop reading.
Seriously.
Because this is going to get pretty mushy.
If you haven’t already heard via Twitter, Mr and I got engaged in Fiji! And although I’m writing about things on our holiday other than the bling and the proposal, there IS sentimental mushiness coming up.
Don’t say that I didn’t warn you.
Mr and I were lucky enough to escape to Fiji at the end of September. Looking back now, I can see why Mr was so keen to go away, but when he suggested that we go somewhere warm to get away from wintery Melbourne, I thought it was a brilliant idea. We had visited Port Douglas during Winter the year before, and it was so lovely to see some sun after months of dreary cold.
Neither of us had been to Fiji before and had no idea where to stay. When I described the sort of holiday we wanted to our travel agent (warm, quiet, beautiful beaches, not too many kiddies) she suggested that we stay away from Denarau on one of the small islands. We eventually chose to stay at Musket Cove Resort on Malolo Lai Lai Island. Best. Decision. Ever. As we drove through Denarau on our way to the ferry, I was so glad that we’d chosen to stay somewhere more remote. Although the hotels in Denarau were beautiful, it was a very built up touristy area. Not what we wanted at all.
Musket Cove was perfect. It was very quiet and a LOT nicer than some of the other island resorts we saw (Plantation, Treasure Island and Beachcomber. Yuck). What I loved about Musket Cove was that you actually felt like you were in Fiji! Sounds silly, but some of the resorts were so built up that you could have been anywhere in the world. Other than the accommodation, restaurant, reception and supermarket, there was so much space to wander in the gardens and along the beach. So beautiful.
Our lagoon bure was absolutely gorgeous, inside and out:
As we had left Melbourne at midnight and arrived at Musket Cove at 9am, the first thing we did was have a nap! After the best nap in the world, we had lunch. I was pretty lazy with my food photography while we were away, but we were quite satisfied with the quality of our meals. We ate a lot of these:
And drank a lot of these:
Mmmmm. Daiquiri. I did get a photo of my favourite meal, which I sadly had to share with others:
After lunch Mr suggested that we go for a walk. I did not want to go for a walk. I wanted to go for a swim. And told him so. He suggested again that we explore the island. I was thinking ‘but it’s 30 degrees! There’s a pool!’. Then I thought ‘don’t be a cow on your first day of your holiday. He probably wants to take the new camera out. Just go for a walk’. So we went for a walk. After I mucked around for half an hour trying to get our phone cards working (thank you so much Optus for switching on our roaming properly. It wasn’t like we HAD A REASON TO CALL EVERYONE).
Finally we set off on our walk. After 5 minutes I started complaining about the heat and that I had a headache. Mr bought me water and I figured I should shut up. We finally approached a lovely beach. We sat down under this tree:
And Mr produced a love letter from his pocket (SEE? I told you there would be mush). Even as he was reading the love letter to me, I really didn’t think that he was going to propose. I just thought he was being romantic! But then BANG, there was a ring!
I cried. A lot. And said yes. While crying and snotting all over myself.
Here’s a shot of the bling:
Mr had spent the last 2 months designing the ring and planning the proposal and I had NO IDEA. So we sat under the tree for a while and he told me everything he’d sneakily been up to.
Of course the rest of the holiday was pretty special after that. Even without the proposal, it would have been fabulous. We spent our days by the pool:
On the beach:
And going on tours and the free snorkelling trips run by the resort. We managed to get some pretty good shots with the disposable waterproof cameras we bought; they’re definitely worth using:
POWER SNORKELLING!
There were a few little cats and dogs running around the resort, this little guy was my favourite. We named him ‘Dude Cat’:
Dude Cat was pretty awesome, mostly because he sat on the beach every night and watched the sunset:
So cute! Speaking of sunsets, they were pretty spectacular:
We got some nice shots on our last night from the proposal spot too:
Awww!
All in all, a pretty damn fabulous holiday. If you’re looking for a quiet getaway that has good food, many MANY cocktails, beautiful beaches and friendly staff, Musket Cove is the place.
If you haven’t ever been to Fiji, you must go. Immediately. We are already thinking about our next visit.

I’ve been to Musket Cove… didn’t get to stay there though unfortunately, we were island hopping from Plantation Island! Musket Cove is MUCH nicer, just beautiful. Plantation is more for families, i think.
Really beautiful post. Congratulations on your engagement. The ring is gorgeous!
Oh, I miss Fiji now. Wonder if I can talk my fiance into a holiday next year…
Congrats!
That was totally not mushy – but totally sweet.
Does your -fiance- have an equally awesome single, straight brother?
I know I said this on twitter ages ago but CONGRATS!!!!!!! Loveeeeeee your holiday snaps. The ring is beautiful.

Aww, how lovely! Congrats again and hope you enjoy the wedding planning!
It’s funny because the way hubby proposed to me is so similar to yours… well, except there was no love letter (hubby is not THAT romantic :P)! He proposed on the beach overseas and I didn’t want to go for a walk either! I remember being so surprised because I didn’t think he would bother bringing the engagement ring overseas!
Congrats!! I recently went to Singapore for a wedding too…seems like its THAT time of yr :)
Wow! Congratulations! What a gorgeous, romantic proposal. My hubby and I honeymooned in Fiji so it is really special to us also. BB x
